How to choose a dental clinic abroad

A low headline price does not tell you who will treat you, what is included or what happens if the plan changes. Use this checklist before sending records, booking travel or paying a deposit.

What should you check before choosing a dental clinic abroad?

1. Identify the clinic

Ask for the clinic's legal name, physical address, contact details and the entity that will issue your treatment contract and invoice.

2. Identify the dentist

Ask who will examine and treat you, which procedures they will perform and how to verify their current professional registration.

3. Separate estimate from diagnosis

Photos and existing scans can support a preliminary estimate. Ask which examination and imaging are still required before the plan becomes final.

4. Compare an itemised plan

Match treatment names, tooth positions, materials, quantities, temporary work, laboratory work, diagnostics, medicines and follow-up. Headline totals alone are not comparable.

5. Check implant components

For an implant, ask whether the figure includes the fixture, healing components, abutment, crown, temporary tooth, imaging and any grafting that may be needed.

6. Discuss risks and alternatives

Ask what could go wrong in your case, what alternatives exist, how long you have to decide and whether treatment can be staged or provided closer to home.

7. Plan aftercare before travel

Know who answers routine questions, which symptoms require urgent local care, whether a UK dentist is needed and who pays for additional appointments or travel.

8. Read the guarantee itself

Ask for the issuer, duration, exclusions, maintenance conditions, remedy, complaint route and responsibility for flights or accommodation. A verbal promise is not a written term.

9. Request complete records

Ask which scans, X-rays, consent documents, treatment notes, laboratory details and implant identifiers you will receive and how copies can be requested later.

10. Check travel and insurance

Read current government travel advice, understand passport and insurance requirements and avoid non-refundable travel until appointments and clinical dependencies are clear.

Red flags that deserve a pause

Pressure before evidence

Be cautious if you are pushed to pay or book travel before the provider, treatment limits and written terms are clear.

One price without components

A figure that omits materials, quantities, diagnostics or likely additions cannot be compared fairly with another quote.

Guaranteed clinical outcome

Treatment can have risks and individual outcomes vary. Ask for balanced information rather than certainty or a success promise.

Compare the evidence, then the price

Use the same questions for every clinic and keep the answers with your estimate, records and travel plan.
